Brave Care Clinic App
Improving the pediatric experience for both children and caretakers by providing an Electronic Health Record for providers and clinic operations.
Brave Care provides pediatric primary and urgent care through modern tools and experiences that help kiddos get the best care. I worked with a team of engineers to build a comprehensive Clinic Web Application that enabled staff to control every aspect of operations (scheduling, patient communications, staffing, and more). We conducted user interviews with clinic staff and patient families to understand their holistic experience.
While the Clinic App was the foundation for all operations, it was not yet equipped to handle the visit portion of the experience. Our providers were using an industry standard product called Kareo for all patient care (vitals, medications, orders, vaccines, etc.). This had now become the primary friction point, so I set out on research with my PM counterpart.
Our goal was to understand the full patient + clinic staff journey in order to best introduce an EHR to caregivers and practitioners. I worked with the Product Manager to script a discussion guide and we conducted 29 calls w/ caregivers, which enabled us to outline 3 key personas to build for.
Next, we went on-site for patient visit and clinic observation. This helped us gain exposure to the care process and the workflow of practitioners.
The research helped us craft a journey map for the entirety of the Brave Care pediatric experience. We shared our findings with the company and started digging into the product work.
Firstly, we had to determine how to introduce a complex EHR system into the existing Clinic App. Through information architecture exercises we developed additional navigational elements to manage a patient’s visit, record all health data, place medical orders, or customize their workflow.
One of the most important parts of an EHR is the “facesheet”, which equips the provider with the patient information they must know to provide care. I worked on this Patient Header component, which contained an immense amount of data in a small UI. This would follow the provider throughout the experience to help them stay in the know and give the best care possible.
My Product Designer counterpart was responsible for the Parent Mobile Application, so we collaborated every step of the way to create responsive components for each section of the patient visit.
I teamed up with our front-end engineering team to establish Scout UI, a comprehensive design system for both brand and product libraries. Our core tenets included accessibility and inclusion, so all components were thoroughly documented and maintained throughout the process.
The new EHR system was rolled out to Brave Care clinics one at a time, so we could iterate and address paint points throughout the release cycle. Click the image above to check out the interactive prototype of the Patient Note experience.
